Adel Abidin’s Symphony I, 2012, he pays homage to Iraqi teenagers stoned to death by religious extremists in Baghdad. The figures in the video are immortalized as statues, icons, and even sacred figures with threads connecting each body by its mouth to the leg of a dove. The viewer is left to watch the stillness of death against the frantically flapping wings of the birds. Abidin was born in Baghdad in 1973 and currently lives and works in Helsinki, Finland. He has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions including the Helsinki Museum of Contemporary Art (KIASMA); the Centre of Contemporary Art, Salamanca; the 10th Sharjah Biennale; The 17th Sydney Biennale; and the 52nd and 54th Venice Biennials.
